NEW EVERY MORNING

Have you ever been tempted to define yourself by your failure rather than by the grace of God?  When that thought comes, you need to deal with it quickly or it threatens to ruin not just your day but your life!  The Bible is a frank record of those who failed but began again through the grace of God – take Peter, Thomas and Paul for example.  Whether your failure is caused by wrong actions, wrong belief or wrong deeds, God’s grace is enough as it was for each one of these examples.  Quotes from famous people tend to major on what we can learn from failure with the incentive that if we’ve never failed then we’ve never tried.  Whilst there’s truth in this, some failure for a Christian can cripple them and rot the soul – at that point, only God’s Word can rehabilitate and heal the soul: 

  • ‘Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness’ – Lamentations 3:22-23

As you read this, realise that God’s grace has been there for you every new day in your life and he promises to continue this, not because you deserve it but because of his great love. Your bit is to acknowledge your need and to receive it.  Through God’s grace, he can then heal, strengthen and bring about the change in your life so that you become an overcomer not a loser.

  • ELIMINATE BAD THOUGHTS – ‘The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ’ – 2 Corinthians 10:4-5
  • GOD REMEMBERS YOU WITH COMPASSION – ‘The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.   He will not always accuse, nor will he harbour his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.   As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.  The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.  But from everlasting to everlasting  the Lord’s love is with those who fear him’ – Psalm 103:8-17
  • NO CONDEMNATION –  ‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus’ – Romans 8:1
  • SUFFICIENT GRACE – ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’ – 2 Corinthians 12:9
  • GOD JUSTIFIES SO WHO CAN CONDEMN OR SEPARATE YOU FROM HIM? – ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.  What, then, shall we say in response to these things?  If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord’ – Romans 8:28-39

For each new year, new month, new day, new hour, new minute, remind yourself that God is for you and not against you.  His Will is not to see you branded as an eternal failure but sealed by his grace in Christ Jesus as his eternal child.  Even when we fail, a child of God is not separated from his love and he is able to bring something good from it.  When asked how many times we should forgive, Jesus himself gave the answer that there is no limit because that’s how he treats us, not as our sins deserve but with everlasting love and compassion (Matthew 18:21-35).  Remind yourself that this is a new day and by the power of the Holy Spirit, those in Christ can always say: ‘I am a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!’ (2 Corinthians 5:17)
