Human diversity has never been more celebrated than it is today.  Yet regardless of culture, race, language, chromosomes and physical characteristics, every human has other aspects that lead to uniqueness within our kind. Experiences, upbringing, hobbies, attitudes, personalities, abilities and tastes to name but a few. However, what we all have in common is that we are part of the human race – each the same yet different.  Seeds from this dandelion will result in clones – often regarded as a weed, this little flower has medicinal properties, can be eaten or drunk like sweet coffee and goes through stages of resembling the sun, the moon and stars!  Whilst the scientific name is Taraxacum meaning bitter herb, the popular name comes from the French ‘dent de lion’ as the root resembles the tooth of a lion. Each dandelion and every human is one of its kind – only Jesus is ‘THE one of a kind’, truly Divine.

Only Jesus has a ‘particularity of uniqueness’ and that matters because your salvation depends on it. If he were just another person, then his history and impact would be interesting but would have no lasting importance.  There are others who have been the pioneers of world religions – they have lived, died and left varying legacies. Only Jesus is unique in his birth, life, death and resurrection. The manner of his birth, the purpose his life and death were prophesied by Isaiah 750 years beforehand. He alone was born of a virgin by the power of God’s Spirit, hence being both human and divine.

If Jesus had not been without sin, he could not have died for the sin of others. Jesus alone can lift people from the power of sin for only he has never been under the power of sin. Only Jesus performed miracles that stunned crowds as he fed them, healed the sick and raised the dead.  If Jesus was not himself raised from the dead appearing to his disciples, why would they have been willing to follow him even to their death as martyrs? The teaching, power and claims about himself as the Son of God and Saviour of mankind are unique.

Never before or since has there been one like this.  Unique in death, in resurrection, in ascension and in his place now at the right hand of his Father God with all authority and holding every title as King of kings and The Name above all names.  Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the Great High Priest for humankind who is bringing many to restoration with almighty God.  John gives us a glimpse of Jesus now before he returns at the end of this world era to take those who have trusted him to be with him for ever:

‘The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.  His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.  When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.  I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades”’ – Revelation 1:14-18

Does it not send a shiver down your spine?  Consider these things as you see the apparently mundane dandelion and be filled with joy in knowing that Jesus, The One and Only, is bringing many through faith into glory with him who will bear the family likeness.  Each of us unique and different as we see only Jesus who is one with his Father, making us one with each other and  enabling us to cry out in worship, ‘Abba, Father, hallowed be Thy Name’.
