Life to the full — spiritually alive in Christ and physically alive in the world.
Most people assume that being alive simply means having breath in their lungs and a pulse in their chest. But Scripture insists there is another kind of life — a deeper, richer, fuller life — the life Jesus came to give.
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10
This is double life in the best sense: physically alive and spiritually alive to God.
1. Alive Physically… but Not Yet Alive to God
Many walk through the world with functioning bodies but silent spirits. They see life, but only in black and white. They feel emotions, but without the deeper colours of hope, purpose, forgiveness, and belonging.
Paul describes this spiritual condition bluntly:
“You were dead in your transgressions… but God made you alive with Christ.” — Colossians 2:13
You can be physically alive but spiritually unaware — like standing in front of a sunrise but only noticing the shadows.
To be alive to God is to suddenly see the world in full colour:
- alive to Who He is
- alive to what He has done
- alive to His love
- alive to His plans
- alive to your identity in Christ Jesus
This is the life Jesus offers — not survival, but fullness.
2. Doubly Alive — The Life Jesus Awakens
When Christ brings someone to life, everything changes:
- Your mind wakes up to truth
- Your heart wakes up to grace
- Your spirit wakes up to God’s presence
- Your purpose wakes up to His calling
You become, in the truest sense, doubly alive.
This is why Paul says:
“Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 6:11
Alive in body. Alive in spirit. Alive in Christ.
3. The Other Kind of Double Life — When Inside Doesn’t Match Outside
But Scripture also warns of a different “double life” — the one that fractures the soul.
It’s the Jekyll and Hyde existence:
- polished on the outside
- conflicted on the inside
- spiritually split
- emotionally exhausted
When the inner reality doesn’t match the outer presentation, life becomes heavy. Miserable. Draining. Because when you’re alone — face to face with your own reality — the mask falls away and the truth demands attention. Life like this is completely draining and it’s one that many people live.
David knew this tension:
“When I kept silent, my bones wasted away… but then I acknowledged my sin.” — Psalm 32:3–5 (summary)
Hidden life leads to hidden pain. But honesty with God leads to healing.
4. The Invitation — Become Fully Alive, Inside and Out
Jesus doesn’t just offer forgiveness; He offers integration. A life where the inside matches the outside. Where your public faith reflects your private reality. Where your soul is not split but whole. This doesn’t mean you will not sin again or are yet perfect, but it does mean that you are accepted.
This is the life that feels like colour returning to a faded world.
A life where you are:
- alive physically
- alive spiritually
- alive authentically
- alive in Christ
This is what it means to be doubly alive.
C4L Takeaway
You were made for more than breath — you were made for fullness. Not a double life that hides, but a doubly alive life that shines. Alive in body. Alive in spirit. Alive in Christ Jesus. Romans 8 sets this out more fully with great beauty.
Life that never ends. Life to the full – don’t settle for less.
