A Selection Of Bible Verses For A Healthy Relationship
Being in a romantic relationship isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, romantic dates and goodnight texts. Relationships can feel difficult sometimes, and not everything always goes to plan, especially when navigating your first – or one of your first – romantic endeavors.
However, a healthy relationship should feel comfortable, content and safe, and the right romantic partner should lift you up and make you feel powerful during your greatest of times, whilst supporting and comforting you during your hardest.
The bible provides us with much guidance on healthy relationships, what to expect and how to treat the person you choose to love, as well as how they should treat you. So, here is a small selection of bible verses for a healthy relationship.
Bible Verses For A Healthy Relationship
1 Corinthians 13:4-5: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
A truly beautiful and moving passage in the bible, this reminds us that love is both patient and kind, it is respectful of all parties, is not quick to get angry and keeps no record of wrong doings. A romantic partner should always lead with patience, kindness, respect and understanding. Probably the most well-known passage on love, 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 shows us what truly loving someone is all about: being patient and understanding.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour: For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
This bible verse serves to remind us of the importance of team work and supporting your partner. For two are better than one, and we should be there to help our partners get back up when they fall.
James 1:19: My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
This encouraging, inspiring and pretty matter of fact bible passage shows us the importance of listening and doing; rather than becoming angry or opposing our loved ones. Simply listening and providing the person you love with the space to speak their truth and tell you how they feel can be a powerful act of love and can be all they need to feel safe and valued.
Matthew 7:12: Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.
You’ve probably already heard a version of this from someone or somewhere in your everyday life, and it’s a great principle to live by – across all the relationships you develop and people you meet throughout your life: treat others how you wish to be treated.
A Final Thought On What Makes A Healthy Relationship
As we can see from the small selection of bible verses above, a healthy relationship is built on a foundation of:
- Trust
- Support
- Patience
- Kindness
- Respect
And shouldn’t feel painful, confusing or scary. When you’re dating or in a relationship with someone, you shouldn’t hurt that person intentionally and they shouldn’t intentionally hurt you, physically or emotionally; you should strive to help each other find happiness.
Remember that God loves you, and he wants you to be happy.
Within this, and when it comes to Christian dating specifically, a healthy relationship brings you closer to God, honours God, and recognises the importance of your relationship with God.
