Letting God’s Promises Shine on Your Problems
There are some people who do not take promises seriously. Take Jonathan Swift’s quip for example: ‘Promises and pie-crust are made to be broken’! Are you known as someone ‘whose word is your bond’ that people trust because of your reliability and follow-through?
For many people, a promise is a bit like a new year’s resolution that they’ll try to keep but they don’t expect to manage a whole year and don’t think it matters too much if they don’t. Imagine God was like that – if He was, then there would be no hope, no physical laws that you could rely on and great uncertainty for spiritual blessings.
Corrie Ten Boom survived the horrors of the holocaust survivor and trusted God in the middle of it. Her conviction was that He is trustworthy and her advice here is to, ‘Let God’s promises shine on your problems’.
Certainties
If you were given a cheque for ten million pounds, it would only be good if you encashed it and the bank would pay up because the one who wrote the cheque has the resources. Bank notes that say they ‘promise to pay the bearer on demand’ used to mean you could swap them for gold – that promise is no longer valid in the UK as the Bank of England departed from the Gold Standard in 1931. So even Governments break their promises and the manifesto promises of political parties are often reneged upon.
God’s Promises Never Fall To The Ground
When everything around you feels uncertain, God’s promises are not. His Word is not a mood, a trend, or a fragile hope—it is a covenant sealed by His character. What He speaks, He sustains. What He begins, He completes. What He promises, He performs.
‘For no matter how many promises God has made, they are Yes in Christ’ – 2 Corinthians 1:20
‘He who promised is faithful’ – Hebrews 10:23
‘Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled’ – Joshua 21:45
Sometimes we treat God’s promises like fragile packages—handle with care, don’t get your hopes up, maybe it won’t arrive. But the God’s Word flips that thinking. The fragile thing isn’t God’s promise; it’s our perspective. His Word is immovable and dependable because it is anchored in His character and in His very being.
When You Feel Wobbly
If you feel weak from hunger, you need to eat some nourishing food. If you feel spiritually insecure, you need to feed on the Word of God.
‘May your unfailing love come to me, Lord, your salvation, according to your promise’ – Psalm 119:41
‘Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does’ – Psalm 145:13
If the ground you are walking on is soft and squidgy, you need to get your feet back on to a firm foundation. Do not let fear rewrite what God has already spoken over your life.
New Every Morning
God’s mercies and faithfulness are spoken over you each dawn of your life – here’s what His Word says to you:
‘Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness’ (Lamentations 3:21-23).
In a world of such uncertainty, He promises to be your refuge and strength (Psalm 46). This promise is anchored in the work of Christ Jesus on your behalf (Hebrews 6:19-20). He is your Advocate in heaven speaking on your behalf and He can never break His word (1 John 2:1-2).

God’s promises are not fragile. They are not seasonal. They are not dependent on your strength, your consistency, or your performance. They stand because He stands. And He stands with you today.
